Dimensions: 32 x 57 x 16 mm.
Sustainability: All the seed is created by Conservation Scientists and responsibly sourced in the UK from Flora Locale accredited suppliers. Only peat-free compost is ever used.
Wildflowers play a crucial role in enhancing soil health. Their deep roots help prevent soil erosion, improve soil structure, promote water infiltration, and create space for soil biodiversity to thrive. This results in healthier soil capable of supporting a variety of plants while reducing the need for irrigation, ultimately conserving water.
Additionally, wildflower gardens provide ongoing support for wildlife. Different species of wildflowers bloom at various times, ensuring a continuous food supply. This is especially important for species with specific blooming periods and those reliant on diverse sources of nectar and pollen throughout the year. Moreover, the seeds produced by these flowers offer a vital food source for birds and small mammals during colder months and provide excellent hibernation spots for insects.
By avoiding the disturbance of your garden soil, you help maintain the delicate balance of microbes, mycelium, and fungal hyphae that are essential for a thriving ecosystem. Exposure to light can harm these organisms, making it difficult for dug soil to return to a healthy state. The improvement in soil quality not only supports plant growth but also enhances the overall health of the local ecosystem.
Materials: Each cardboard matchbox contains 6 seed balls holding approximately 30 UK wildflower seeds suiting different conditions (a mix of Cornflower, Red Campion, Oxeye Daisy, Musk Mallow and Meadow Cranesbill), clay (to protect the seed from ants, mice, birds etc.), peat-free compost (to give seeds a boost), chilli powder (an extra predator deterrent).
Packaging: Naked.
Directions: Best scattered in autumn or spring on top of the soil in a sunny location. Avoid fully shaded areas, underneath plants or in grass. Ensure adequate moisture, either through natural rainfall or regular watering, especially during dry periods. For grassy areas, it is best to remove a layer of topsoil before scattering your seed balls. 3-5 seed balls are advised for a 350 mm container.
IMPORTANT: Wildflowers scattered in the spring may not flower in the first year. The annuals are the most likely to bloom, and this may not be until the end of Summer. The full display typically will not appear until the following spring and summer.
If you scatter your seed balls in the autumn, you are more likely to see flowers the following spring and summer because the seeds will have had time to establish roots and will be more ready to bloom as the weather warms up.
Native UK wildflowers are slow growers compared to many plants commonly found in gardens. Patience is essential! They are a long-term investment for nature in your garden.
Seedballs will keep well for planting during the next few years if they are stored in a cool and dry place.
